West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple Pioneers
Through the efforts of these temple pioneers,
the West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple was
organized in 1926 as one of the branches of the
Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist
Temple. Howakai meetings were held in
individual homes and it was then known as the
Sawtelle Howakai.
In 1928, the Sunday School was formed. The
services were held each Sunday in a commercial
store on Sawtelle Blvd. and later transferred to the
Japanese Language School on Corinth Avenue.
The present site of the Temple was purchased in
1930. In 1950, after receiving an official
independency from Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji
Buddhist Temple, it was designated as the
West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple.
